The Sekuterski brothers walked side by side out of Ralph Wilson Stadium and into Depew football lore.
Dylan Sekuterski, the Wildcats’ junior quarterback, and Derrick Sekuterski, a senior wide receiver and linebacker, played prominent roles Saturday night as Depew dethroned three-time defending Section VI Class B champion Alden, 28-26, before an estimated 1,400.
In winning its first sectional title since 2007, Depew also snapped a seven-game losing streak against Alden that dated back to 2008 and included a Sept. 28 loss at home and a loss in the 2011 sectional final.
“We’ve lost seven straight, but winning the eighth one feels great,” Dylan Sekuterski said.
Depew (7-3), the News’ No. 5 small school and the state’s 13th-ranked Class B team, will face Section V champion Geneva at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester in Far West Regionals.
Dylan Sekuterski passed for three touchdowns and connected with Derrick Sekuterski on a two-point conversion that proved to be the difference in the game.
Derrick Sekuterski teamed with Nick Perrine to stop Alden quarterback Brian Stoldt on a two-point try that would have tied the game with 1:32 left to play.
“I can’t even put into words how it feels to play out here with Dylan and it’s a memory we are going to have forever,” Derrick Sekuterski said. “It just feels awesome.”
Depew overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit and took a 28-14 lead on Nick Perrine’s 10-yard touchdown run with 6:31 remaining.
But Alden (9-1), the News’ No. 1 small school, was determined to try and pull out its fourth dramatic comeback win of the season.
Brian Stoldt led Alden on an 11-play, 79-yard drive that included a conversion on fourth-and-10 and ended with Stoldt finding Dylan Dussault for a 25-yard touchdown that made it 28-20 with 3:37 to go.
After Depew’s Quincy Majerowicz blocked the point-after try, Austin Palizay recovered an onside kick for Alden.
Stoldt converted again on fourth down before hitting Ryan Richards for a 19-yard touchdown that gave Alden a chance to tie the game.
On the two-point try, Stoldt rolled to his right and appeared to have an alley toward the end zone, but Derrick Sekuterski cut him off at the pylon and Perrine dragged Stoldt down from behind with the ball hovering inches away from the goal line.
“I had the receiver right there and I saw Stoldt coming and I was kind of in no man’s land, do I stay or do I go?” Sekuterski said. “When he came up, I said, ‘I gotta go,’ and we stopped him.”
Depew coach Brian Wilson got déjà vu watching the play, as the Wildcats made a stop at the goal line to persevere their 2007 sectional final win over East Aurora.
“I was saying, we have to come up one more time,” Wilson said. “Brian Stoldt did everything he could to make that play and he’s made too many of them against us over the years. He’s just a great kid.”
Alden’s second onside kick attempt was unsuccessful, and with the Bulldogs out of timeouts, the Wildcats ran out the last 90 seconds.
Stoldt completed 19 of 34 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 33 yards on 10 carries. Dussault caught four passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, Austin Hopcia caught eight passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, and Richards had four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. Lyle Grant totaled 127 yards on 18 carries and two receptions, but only nine yards came after halftime.
“I’m proud of the way they responded there to adversity,” Alden coach Rob Currin said. “That’s kind of been our story all year. We just ran out of time.”
The Wildcats won despite being out-gained 443 yards to 287. Dylan Sekuterski was 8 of 12 passing for 187 yards. Rodney Turner rushed for 34 yards on 11 carries despite limping around on an injured leg. Cody Penner caught two passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns and Derrick Sekuterski had 64 yards on two receptions.
