Buffalo News small school poll: Cleveland Hill No. 2 (one point behind No. 1 Randolph).

New York State Sportswriters Association Class C poll: Cleveland Hill No. 4; Wayland-Cohocton No. 8.

Cleveland Hill in the regionals: 0-3. The Golden Eagles lost in 2000 (14-3 to Caledonia-Mumford), 2007 (47-20 to LeRoy) and last year (27-6 to Hornell).

Wayland-Cohocton in the regionals: First appearance.

Coaches: Cleveland Hill, Glen Graham, 11th season (69-25); Wayland-Cohocton, Joe Sabo, second season (12-6).

Cleveland Hill key players (and statistics): Sr. QB Aaron Jackson, 5-foot-9, 150 (26-75, 553 yards, 6 TDs; 50-251 rushing, 1 TD); Jr. QB Anthony Sullivan, 5-8, 130 (19-39, 269 yards, 48.7 pct., 2 TDs, 2 INTs; 31-155 rushing, 2 TDs); Sr. RB Brandon Thomas, 5-10, 190 (147-872, 11 TDs; 22 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 INT); So. RB Grayson Taylor, 5-9, 195 (38-357, 4 TDs); Sr. WR Jared Watkins, 6-0, 145 (23-538 receiving, 9 TDs); Sr. FB Josh White, 5-4, 205 (88 tackles; 27-153 rushing, 1 TD); Sr. G Tyler Pawlowski, 5-11, 195 (86 tackles, 2 INTs); Sr. Wayne Jones, 6-0, 175 (80 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT; 2 rush TDs).

How they got here: Cleveland Hill repeated by beating the same team it did last year in Fredonia, 22-13. Wayland-Cohocton won its first sectional title with a 14-8 victory over LeRoy.

Pre-snap read: Way-Co’s only loss came at Livonia, 27-22, in Week Five; otherwise, going into last week it had won all of its games by at least 20 points. Coach Sabo has been a big supporter of a football program that was at times funded by players since its inception just 17 years ago.

Devon Harris, a 5-9, 160-pound junior, has amassed 1,635 yards and 29 rushing touchdowns and has run back two kickoffs for TDs. The senior quarterback is 5-8, 180 C.J. Ellis. Cleveland Hill impressively shut down Fredonia’s high-scoring offense with a tough defense that includes several impact players; meanwhile Thomas ran for three touchdowns and Aaron Jackson ran things effectively. Golden Eagle players are aiming to take the next step they weren’t able to take last year and become the first Cleve Hill team to make the state semifinals.

What’s next: The winner will return to Sahlen’s next Saturday at noon for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals and a chance to advance to the championship game at noon Dec. 1 at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome. The opponent will be determined in today’s noon Central Regional between Section III (Syracuse area) champion General Brown (9-1, No. 6 in state poll) and Section IV (Binghamton area) champion Chenango Forks (9-1, No. 3) at Union-Endicott High’s Ty Cobb Stadium.
