Sophomore Olivia Schmidt scored with 20 seconds left in the third overtime as the Holland girls soccer team moved within one game of a New York State Class C title beating Northern Adirondack, 2-1, in a game played Saturday at Cortland State. Schmidt’s game-winner came on a header off a corner kick from Chelsea Grupp.
It was the second goal of the game for Schmidt, who also scored 1 minute into the contest. Northern Adirondack scored with 15 minutes left in regulation to tie it. The teams played two scoreless 10-minute overtimes before moving into a 5-minute sudden death period.
Schmidt’s goals give her 96 in her career. The Dutchwomen (18-1-1) will play Haldane from Cold Spring in Putnam County at 10 a.m. today at Cortland.
Holland was the only soccer team from Section VI, boys or girls, to advance past the Far West Regional round against Rochester. In last week’s regional they knocked off previously undefeated Keshequa in double overtime. Keshequa had been to states the last two years.
Coming off the long game with Northern Adirondack, coach George Schmidt said his team went back to the hotel, iced down, stayed off their feet and are going to go to bed early. “We’re serious about trying to make some history for Holland tomorrow,” he said.
Cazenovia junior attack Ashley Kent scored 3:44 into the second OT on a penalty corner. Kent was unmarked when she took a nice pass, stayed low to the ground and used her momentum to sweep the ball into the net.
Caz had 14 penalty corners to Barker’s two. The Raiders managed only one shot on goal. “We looked strong early-on, but we weren’t not able to generate any kind of attack inside their end of the field,” said coach Jeff Costello. “When we carried the ball down we didn’t have a numbers advantage. We struggled. We weren’t in the circle much.”
Barker sophomore goalie Caitlyn Mason had eight saves and was named to the all-tournament team.
The Raiders, who were making their third trip to states in the last four years, finished 17-2. The Section VI title was their sixth in a row.
The Raiders will face Millbrook of Section I at noon. The Raiders took two games against VIII-Mattituck, I-Millbrook, II-Voorheesville. Eden’s scores over Mattituck were 25-15 and 25-9. Heather Holscher had 13 kills and Sam Burgio added nine. A title for the Raiders would be their fifth a row.
Randolph finished 4-2 in pool play and also advanced to the Class D finals against Haldane at 2 p.m.
