T.J. Hornberger of Lake Shore and Sophia Tasselmyer of Starpoint earned places in the Nike Cross Country Nationals Saturday at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
Running unattached, Hornberger was second overall but was the top individual qualifier in the boys race in 15.40.8 over the 5K (3.1 mile) course in the Nike New York Regional Championship race to qualify for next Saturday’s Nike Nationals in Portland, Ore.
Tasselmyer, who ran representing the Aurora team, was fourth in the girls race (18:34.8) to earn her spot in the nationals. Aurora finished third among the girls teams behind Manlius and Kinetic RC of Saratoga Springs.
Hornberger was second behind Mike Brannigan of Northport (L.I.) who won in 15:29.9. Brannigan will go the national meet with the Northport team which qualified second behind Manlius. Five individual boys and girls plus two teams each qualified for the nationals.
