Jack Boyd won two races in automatic All-American times to highlight several outstanding swims for Canisius at the 39th Viking Invitational at Cleveland State. Boyd went 1:39.13 to win the 200 freestyle and 4:29.62 to win the 500 free. Boyd also anchored the 200 free relay that finished second and the 400 free relay that came in third. He was the obvious choice as the Swimmer of the Meet.
Luke Otto was second in the 200 IM in 1:54.88 and swam both freestyle relays.
James Polornowski (200, 500) and Allen Collins (100 free, 200 free) also placed in the top 10 in their events.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Tyler English earned MVP honors as the St. Mary’s boys basketball team defended its title of the Depew Tournament, beating the host Wildcats, 63-58. English had 19 points, four blocks and seven rebounds to give the Lancers a 4-1 start. Matt Wrobel, named to the all-tournament team for St. Mary’s, added 13 points.
Griffin O’Brien had 14 points to lead 12 scorers as Lancaster beat City Honors, 74-72, in the consolation.
In the Monsignor Martin Association, No. 1 ranked Canisius moved to 6-0 with a 72-41 win over Cardinal O’Hara. Stafford Trueheart had 16 points and Howard Washington added 11 for the Crusaders.
HOCKEY: Tyler Gaglia had two goals and Alex Buczek had two assists as Frontier double up Orchard Park, 6-3, to improve to 4-3 overall.
