1. Canisius boys swimming. Last weekend was another big one as the Crusaders came from 40 points down with four events to go to win the 16-team Schenectady Invitational by 35. Jack Boyd was the swimmer of the meet for setting two meet records (50 and 100 freestyles) while Luke Otto also set a meet record (100 breaststroke). Capped off the week with the ultimate compliment: Crusaders were guests on PrepTalkTV last night.
2. Cardinal O’Hara girls basketball. Added another impressive win Thursday by beating top 10 large school Hamburg. Head to Erie, Pa., for Martin Luther King Basketball Showcase this weekend.
3. Canisius basketball. No. 1 large school lost Tuesday at Bishop Kearney but still have to have the overall top boys basketball spot. Bounced back nicely with a blowout of St. Francis Thursday, so they appear ready for Saturday afternoon’s date with the Macks at the MLK.
4. McKinley basketball. Arguably putting up the best boys basketball results lately with a win over Williamsville North Friday followed by Wednesday’s huge win at East. Can that run continue against Canisius?
5. Nichols hockey. Girls (13-2-3) head to prestigious Northwood Tournament in Lake Placid this weekend; boys (8-6-3) dropped second meeting against Ontario superpower St. Andrew’s, which they beat in December.
6. Clarence wrestling. Impressive championship at Lockport Tournament, where Red Devils had four champions: Dylan Arena (99 pounds), Ryan Burns (113), Nate Schwab (160), Jack Weber (170).
7. East and Olean boys basketball. Last weekend, Olean’s loss at Aquinas (where East had won), earned East my No. 1 small school vote. However, after East’s home loss to McKinley (it should be noted that senior big man Tyree Tyson is out), we’ll keep these two together.
8. Federation Division I boys hockey’s top five. Division is loaded. Niagara-Wheatfield was in first place last week, now it’s fourth. Canisius beat rival Joe’s last week. Williamsville North coach Bob Rosen won his 400th game. Bishop Timon-St. Jude has had nice wins lately. St. Joe’s just beat Wheatfield.
9. Lancaster indoor track. Deep team was on display in fine performance at Dartmouth College Relays, including wins by McKenzie Keuhlewind (shot put) and Ashley Grazen (55 meters).
10. Frontier girls basketball. Undefeated at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in ECIC I competition after an extremely big win on a road trip to Jamestown, which was ranked second to Frontier’s third in this week’s News large school poll.
