St. Joe’s junior Richie Jones was Western New York’s only individual state champion while St. Francis won the Division II (small school) title at the New York State Catholic High Schools Athletic Association wrestling championships at Chaminade High on Long Island.
The top-seeded Jones won all of his bouts in the 170-pound weight class by fall or technical fall, including a pin in the championship as he pinned Alex Melikian of downstate’s Kennedy Catholic in 1:08.
St. Francis amassed 147 points, giving it the highest total among the five participating local schools (Canisius, St. Mary’s and Gow also attended) and the top total among nine Division II schools.
Monsignor Martin Association wrestlers who lost in the finals were: Kyrill Calkins (106) and Jacob Braunscheidel (195) of St. Francis; Dominic Caruso (113), Eesaa Abdur-Rahman (160) of St. Joe’s and Solomon Renfro (220) of Canisius.
Wednesday’s semifinals at Northtown Center have NT meeting Williamsville East at 6 p.m. before Kenmore East plays Hamburg.
Matt Aichinger had a goal and two assists and Matt Steffan was credited with the game-winner as top-seeded Williamsville East beat Sweet Home, 4-2.
Anthony Tulipane scored twice, David Christopher had three assists and Ryan Zier’s goal was the game-winner as second-seeded Kenmore East beat Grand Island, 5-3.
Third-seeded Hamburg beat Kenmore West, 2-1, as Alex Suchan scored twice and Brendan Hart and Ethan Sachse each had two assists.
Madison Sansone scored two of her three goals in the third period to help the Vikings (28-4-3), ranked fourth in the nation, pull away after carrying a 2-1 lead into the final frame. The game capped a big weekend by the Providence College-bound senior as Sansone recorded five goals and nine points total in Nichols’ four wins.
Olivia Zafuto scored twice Sunday and finished the tournament with five goals and three assists. The Vikings won their three preliminary-round games before Sunday’s title game by a combined score of 19-2.
Colgate-bound Annika Zalewski led Nichols with six goals and 11 points, Ohio State-bound Julianna Iafallo had four goals and 10 points. Goalie Maddie Welch won all four games in the tournament – making 16 saves in the final.
Nichols, which made history by becoming the first team to win both the NAPHA and Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association playoff titles two years in a row last season, now attempt the three-peat. The Vikings host a CISAA semifinal Thursday against Ridley College (Ont.).

North Tonawanda’s Sam Rydzewski scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:10 to play, to lift the fifth-seeded Lumberjacks to a 3-2 upset victory over fourth-seeded Lew-Port during a Section VI Division II quarterfinal quadrupleheader at Northtown Center of Amherst. Shakenya Ward-Brassell had 30 points and eight assists as St. Mary’s School for the Deaf beat Delaware School for the Deaf, 67-47, for third place in the Eastern Schools for the Deaf tournament in Rome.
