The home teams, the higher seeds, ruled the opening night Tuesday of the Section VI girls and boys basketball players.
Only five visiting teams triumphed in games involving mostly lower-seeded teams.
No doubt that the happiest team is Lackawanna, which had been winless in the regular season. The No. 14 seeded Lady Steelers upset No. 3 seed Health Sciences, 42-32, in a Class B-2 prequarterfinal to shed the agony of defeat. Sophomore captain Reginique Jackson had 12 points for the winners.
The night’s scoring honors went to Colleen Wirth of Iroquois, who had 33 points to lead the visiting Chiefs over Cheektowaga, 67-65, in an A-2 quarterfinal. No. 10 Depew triumphed at No. 7 City Honors, 58-25, in B-1 as Idalis Santiago led with 17 points. Olean, normally seeded higher than No. 9, triumphed over No. 8 CSAT, 67-49, at Kenmore East. Rachel Painter and Katie Skudlarek had 14 points each for the Huskies.
No. 15 Burgard provided the only seeded upset in boys sectionals, winning at No. 10 Falconer, 54-45, in Class B-1 as Isaiah Jamison led the way with 19 points.
Kenmore East and North Tonawanda met for the third time this season in the girls Class A-1 quarterfinals, and the Bulldogs triumphed for the third time, 72-50. Kiaja O’Neill (19) and Kendall Mills (18) led a balanced attack. Mills also had seven rebounds, eight steals and five assists.
In girls Class A-2, Pioneer’s Jacque Law scored 27 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and had five steals to lead the No. 8 Panthers over Lake Shore, 50-37.
Danyae Barclay had 25 points to lead No. 4 Bennett over No. 13 Dunkirk, 59-44, in a B-1 prequarterfinal. The 6-foot-1 junior captain also had 19 rebounds and 11 blocks for the Tigers.
Twelve Canisius players scored in the No. 1-ranked Crusaders’ 66-47 victory over visiting Bishop Timon-St. Jude.
That completed a 12-0 regular season for Canisius in the Monsignor Martin Association. Sophomore guard Howard Washington led Canisius with 18 points.
Tyler English had 26 points for St. Mary’s in a 60-56 win at St. Joe’s in another Monsignor Martin encounter.
