Roman West hit a shot at the buzzer to give Hutch-Tech a 71-69 win over Grand Island in a Class A-1 prequarterfinal boys basketball game.
West, who had a game-high 23 points, hit a 15-footer as time expired to give Engineers the win.
“We were up five points with one minute to go in the game,” Hutch-Tech coach David Nieves said. “That tells you something about our team. We lost a five-point lead being weak with the basketball and not being strong but we came back and showed some fortitude in hitting the last-second shot.”
Jadon Wegrzyn hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to tie the game for Grand Island.
Hutch-Tech (10-9) plays No. 1 seed Williamsville South on Friday.
While Dussault led the way, fellow first-team All-Western New York football player Brian Stoldt made an impact without scoring a point as the “one” in the Bulldogs’ box-and-one defense against Violets scoring standout Lester Diaz (12 points).
Southwestern went on a 28-16 run in the fourth quarter to send the game into the extra period, but the Rams (10-9) were solid in overtime to pull away for the win and advance to play Health Sciences at Nichols on Friday.
“We turned it over a few times early in the fourth and Andrew Bell hit some threes for them,” Roy-Hart coach Mark Rydza said. “In overtime we got the momentum going.”
Bell finished with 17 points and five three-pointers for Southwestern.
Stoddard, a senior, went 16 of 22 from the free throw line to pace Roy-Hart. “He drives quite a bit,” Rydza said. “He takes the ball to the basket and he gets fouled a lot.”
In other B-2 action, Wilson turned up the defense and got some key long range shots and rebounds to turn a five-point deficit into a 47-44 win over Emerson.
Trailing by 44-39 with 2:12 left in the game, Joseph Littere hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two and Evan Shank hit a three to give the Lakers a one-point lead. Kyle Bradley (22 points) then put back an offensive rebound to extend the lead the three and secure the win.
Now Lancaster (12-7) gets what it was hoping for — a rematch with No. 3 Clarence. The teams will meet in the quarterfinals on Friday. Clarence won both regular season meetings — by 21 and six just last week.
Three players scored in double figures for the Redskins, led by Joe Jankowski who had 15 points and eight rebounds. Mike Spengler and Alex Konst each had 10 as nine players made their way into the scoring column.
