Roman West hit a shot at the buzzer to give Hutch-Tech a 71-69 win over Grand Island in a Class A-1 prequarterfinal boys basketball game.

West, who had a game-high 23 points, hit a 15-footer as time expired to give Engineers the win.

“We were up five points with one minute to go in the game,” Hutch-Tech coach David Nieves said. “That tells you something about our team. We lost a five-point lead being weak with the basketball and not being strong but we came back and showed some fortitude in hitting the last-second shot.”

Jadon Wegrzyn hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to tie the game for Grand Island.

Hutch-Tech (10-9) plays No. 1 seed Williamsville South on Friday.

Dussault leads Alden

Dylan Dussault had 35 points and 21 rebounds as Alden, seeded 12th in Class B-1, knocked off No. 5 seed Lafayette, 65-52, at City Honors.

While Dussault led the way, fellow first-team All-Western New York football player Brian Stoldt made an impact without scoring a point as the “one” in the Bulldogs’ box-and-one defense against Violets scoring standout Lester Diaz (12 points).

Stoddard scores 32

Alex Stoddard scored 32 points, none more important than his nine in overtime, as Roy-Hart earned a 79-71 win over Southwestern in the Class B-2 quarterfinals.

Southwestern went on a 28-16 run in the fourth quarter to send the game into the extra period, but the Rams (10-9) were solid in overtime to pull away for the win and advance to play Health Sciences at Nichols on Friday.

“We turned it over a few times early in the fourth and Andrew Bell hit some threes for them,” Roy-Hart coach Mark Rydza said. “In overtime we got the momentum going.”

Bell finished with 17 points and five three-pointers for Southwestern.

Stoddard, a senior, went 16 of 22 from the free throw line to pace Roy-Hart. “He drives quite a bit,” Rydza said. “He takes the ball to the basket and he gets fouled a lot.”

In other B-2 action, Wilson turned up the defense and got some key long range shots and rebounds to turn a five-point deficit into a 47-44 win over Emerson.

Trailing by 44-39 with 2:12 left in the game, Joseph Littere hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two and Evan Shank hit a three to give the Lakers a one-point lead. Kyle Bradley (22 points) then put back an offensive rebound to extend the lead the three and secure the win.

Lancaster gets rematch

With balanced scoring and a strong third quarter, Lancaster advanced in the Class AA playoffs with a 65-51 win over Niagara-Wheatfield.

Now Lancaster (12-7) gets what it was hoping for — a rematch with No. 3 Clarence. The teams will meet in the quarterfinals on Friday. Clarence won both regular season meetings — by 21 and six just last week.

Three players scored in double figures for the Redskins, led by Joe Jankowski who had 15 points and eight rebounds. Mike Spengler and Alex Konst each had 10 as nine players made their way into the scoring column.

“That’s how we’ve been playing all year,” Lancaster coach John Otto said. “We have three games where all the kids have scored, and it’s not usual for us to have eight or nine guys score.”

Nix paces Sweet Home

A big fourth quarter allowed Sweet Home to blow open its Class A-1 prequarterfinal game and earn a 54-34 win over West Seneca East.

The Panthers led by just one, 32-31, after three quarters but went on a 22-3 tear in the fourth to advance to play fourth-seeded North Tonawanda on Friday.

James Nix had nine of his game-high 18 points in the fourth as Sweet Home finally broke down the 2-1-2 zone West Seneca East was playing. Nix went 8 of 10 from the free throw line. Adrian Drake provided a defensive spark off the bench with four steals in the fourth quarter.

In other A-1 action, Hamburg had three players in double figures and held off a late charge from Starpoint for a 62-53 win. Brendan Ryan scored 18 for Hamburg (10-9), Brandon Pierce added 15 and Griffin Ryan 11.
