Rachel Filipski of Lancaster won the last event, tying the state record with a 9.85 score in the vault, to give Section VI the team gymnastics championship of the State Public High Schools Athletic Association championship at Brockport State, dethroning Section XI (Suffolk County, Long Island). It was third state team championship for Section VI.
Filipski was one of three Section VI individual champions. Courtney Bondanza of Lancaster won All-Around and Ana Reyes (Williamsville East) was first on the balance beam.
Bondanza was second in floor exercise and uneven bars, third in vault and tied for third on beam.
Section VI finished with a 186.60 score. Runner-up Section XI had 182.05.
INDOOR TRACK: MacKenzie Kuehlewind of Lancaster won the girls shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 2¼ inches in the State Public High Schools and Federation meet in Ithaca. Kuehlewind was the only individual champion from Western New York, but the area was well represented on the medals chart.
Ashley Grazen, a sophomore at Lancaster, was second in the girls 55-meters in 7.14 seconds. Grazen also ran the second leg on Lancaster’s 4x200 relay which finished fourth in 1:48.07, a Section VI record.
Devon Patterson of Williamsville South was third in the boys shot put (62-9¾).
The Section VI medley relay of Aaron Granger, Mitch Loiacano, Noah McGhee and Peter Rindfuss finished fourth in 9:07.26, a Section VI record.
BOYS HOCKEY: Dom Perna’s third-period goal gave St. Joe’s a 2-1 victory over St. Anthony’s (L.I.) and a second straight state Catholic high school championship and the third in four years.
John Schmitt scored in the first two minutes of the game for St. Joe’s.
Marauders goalie Peter Chopra made 17 saves in the victory.
RIFLE: Section VI took the team title and Western New York shooters swept all four individual titles in the State Public High Schools championships at West Point.
Rhianna Lichtenthal of Orchard Park led with a 277.12 aggregate score. She was first in kneeling (93.03) and prone (98.06) while Noah Fox of Alden won the offhand (89.01). Clarence was second among schools teams with 1,026 led by Jake Saeli and Karen Eisenberger.
Alden was second in the high school team air rifle with 1,094 while Section VI was third in the sectional scoring with 1,341. Lichtenthal was the high WNY finisher with 279 for eighth.
BOWLING: Led by Chad Mee’s six-game 1,346 (224.33 average) and a 1,259 by Bryan Carson (209.83), Frontier captured the schools team title in the state tournament at Babylon Lanes on Long Island. Mee had a high game of 248 in the morning and 242 in the afternoon. The Falcons had a 1,040 high team game as they built a 115-pin lead then bowled a steady 989, 969 and 975 in the afternoon to clinch the title.
Niagara Falls finished sixth in the girls schools competition with 5,251. The Wolverines were led by Hailey Johnson’s 1,162 (193.66 average), which was seventh among the individual girls.
