Lockport tops Clarence in baseball; Riverside takes tennis title

Lockport ended defending Section VI Class AA champion Clarence’s 2014 baseball playoff run in the quarterfinal round with a 10-inning win Wednesday.

The win didn’t come easy – the Lions had to fight back from a 3-0 deficit to force the game into extra innings.

Brad Wroboleski hit two home runs, including a two-run blast in the seventh inning to tie game at 3. Wroboleski also pitched four innings of one-hit ball in relief of Charlie Sobieraski, who allowed three runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Noah Vanden Bosch knocked in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the 10th inning, bringing home Tyler Fross, who had doubled.

In Monsignor Martin action, St. Francis defeated Nichols, 12-2. Andrew Krakowski got the win for the Red Raiders, striking out seven.

Riverside captured its first championship in the 98-year history of coed high school tennis in the city of Buffalo with a 7-0 victory over Hutch-Tech on Wednesday.

The Frontiers, whose roster is entirely made up of foreign-born players, finished the 2014 season 11-0-1 after moving up to a larger division.

Freshman Ehkalue Soe finished the season with a 12-0 record in boys singles. The girls doubles pair of junior Niang Kin and senior Nuam Huai, who are sisters, also claimed victory in every match they competed in.
