HONEOYE FALLS — As expected, it was all Section V, all afternoon.
The Rochester-area girls’ lacrosse champions dominated the Far West Regionals Saturday at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, sweeping three matchups over their Section VI competition.
The headliner, the Class A game between V-Pittsford (14-5) and Lancaster (14-4), was the closest one. But the Panthers’ balance proved too much as they claimed a 14-8 victory.
“They have so many girls that can score, so many girls that can move the ball, and I think we were just a little less athletic than they were,” said Lancaster coach Julie Buccieri.
Senior midfielder Abigail Cullinan and sophomore attacker Megan Plain had four goals apiece for the Panthers, as did junior midfielder Grace Gabriel for Lancaster.
“We can hurt teams from all different places,” said Pittsford coach Donovan Lopez. “If you start focusing on one player, we can get you with others.”
In Class C, V-Honeoye Falls-Lima’s transition game led it to a 19-4 rout of Lake Shore (12-4).
Three Cougars (16-4) had hat tricks: junior midfielder Kayla O’Connell, junior midfielder Katie Stankaitis and senior midfielder Taylor Reed. Senior attacker Shelby Stevens led Lake Shore with two goals.
The Cougars have now been to the state semis six times under coach Kevin O’Connell. They have yet to win a title.
“Marv Levy has nothing on me,” he said.
With his team up 2-1 early, O’Connell called a timeout to remind his troops of three concepts: effort, hustle and playing smart. It was a blowout from there on out.
The Class B matchup was a no-doubter from the beginning. Section V champion Victor (18-2) smacked Hamburg, 16-5, after jumping to a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Devils stymied the Bulldogs’ offense and kept the ball moving in Hamburg’s half of the field. Victor junior attacker Alyssa Fries had four goals and senior midfielder Hannah Savage added three. Senior midfielder Taylor Wolf had three for Hamburg (12-7)
Victor overcame perennial power Brighton to advance to the regional. Coach Jamie Smith got ice cream for her team the first time they beat Brighton this season. After the second time, the league final, they asked her to go to Las Vegas.
She said: “I can’t take you there, but I can take you to Cortland,” Smith’s alma mater, where her squad and the other two victorious teams play Friday in the state semifinals.
