Hamburg, OP, Akron lose in Regionals

The quest for a state title never got out of Buffalo city limits for three Section VI boys lacrosse teams on Saturday. Hamburg and Orchard Park each saw one-goal games slip away, while Penn Yan continued its Class C dominance over Akron in front of a combined crowd of 2,600 at the Far West Regionals on Saturday at All High Stadium.

Hamburg (15-5) saw an early 5-2 lead slip away against Victor (17-3) in a 10-8 loss in the Class B regional. Hamburg senior Lucas Shafer scored three straight goals early as the Bulldogs looked for their second straight trip to the semifinals, but the Blue Devils defense stiffened to yield just two second-half goals. Shafer had four on the day, but a 6-1 Victor run of fast-break lacrosse in the second proved key.

“That really sealed the deal for them,” Hamburg coach Jerry Severino said. “Those last two and a half or three minutes where they threw the ball in three or four times. We were in scramble mode.”

Shafer became the defensive priority for Victor after taking an 8-6 lead into the break.

“He just started taking over the game,” Victor coach Jim Andre said. “We made an adjustment with our kids to make sure we lock him off when the ball went other places. ... That really helped change the momentum of the game.”

Shafer’s two shots on goal in the fourth were stopped by Brennan Mackey, and Dan Barrow notched the only goal of the quarter with 3:46 left to seal Victor’s first trip to the semis since 2003.

In the A final, Fairport (18-2) never trailed after senior Ryan Crater scored a natural hat trick of his own in the first quarter of a 11-8 win. Orchard Park (15-4) turned a 7-3 deficit into an 8-all tie in the third, but Kacin Welch’s goal gave Fairport back the lead.

Orchard Park was also shut out in the final frame while Fairport senior Justin Kesselring netted two of his three goals on scorching running shots in the fourth, sending Fairport back to the state semifinals after a one-year absence. Sophomore Kevin McParlane led Orchard Park with three goals in the loss, while Charlie Wistner made 12 saves.

“Our guys did everything we asked them to,” Quakers coach Gene Tundo said. “That’s a team you can see in the state finals easily.”

While Orchard Park and Hamburg each saw games slip away, Akron (15-5) faced a Mustangs stampede in a 19-4 Class C final loss. Penn Yan scored at will against an overmatched Tigers squad, snagging its 18th Far West Regional win thanks to seven goals from senior forward Andrew Perl. Bradley Voigt and Craig Gerhardt added three goals each for Penn Yan (17-3), while Akron got goals from Larson Sundown, Owen Hill, Zak Hayes and Wyn Blueye.

“I thought we had enough possessions to make it close, but we just couldn’t get one by the goalie,” Akron coach Bryan Bellis said.

Section V’s trio now moves on to the state semifinals on Wednesday at Cicero-North Syracuse, while the Section VI squads hope for better days against their perennial Rochester foes next year.

Starpoint, Albion to meet for Class A baseball title

Starpoint had a standout season a year ago, only to have its season end in the sectional semifinals against Williamsville South.

This year the Spartans had a few bumps in the road, but they’ve rallied at the right time.

Starpoint got a four-hitter from Alex O’Donnell and two RBIs from Mike Lane as they used a three-run first to get started on a 5-2 victory over South in the Section VI Class A-1 championship game Saturday afternoon at Lew-Port.

“Last year we went 18-5 and lost to Will South, this year we had some injuries and lost some players and we lost a couple of games,” said ninth-year Starpoint coach Tim Racey. “They’ve really played well the last six games. They’ve done a great job in sectionals. It’s great to watch them play, I’m so proud of them. I think they’re realizing how they’re a pretty talented group.”

O’Donnell struck out nine while also going 2 for 3 with a triple.

“O’Donnell came back on four days rest after a complete game against Iroquois, and he typically needs a little longer to come back, but he was dealing today,” said Racey. “He signed with Canisius early in the year and he sure looked like a Division I player out there today.”

Starpoint (13-5) will take on Albion for the Class A title at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Lew-Port, an old Niagara-Orleans League matchup (Starpoint moved to ECIC in 2004).

Albion defeated Springville, 8-3, in the second game of the doubleheader at Lew-Port. Connor Barleben got the victory on the mound and helped start the Purple Eagles off with a three-run first with his two-run RBI double.

CLASS B: Fredonia and Gowanda will return to Jamestown’s Diethrick Park to play for the overall championship on Wednesday.

On Saturday, Gowanda scored a big win in the B-2 final (7-1 over Cleveland Hill) after a big hit in the bottom of the seventh lifted the defending Class B state champions in B-1. Jarod Burmaster singled up the middle with two outs to score Weston Ley and give the Hillbillies a 3-2 victory over Olean.

CLASS C: Cassadaga Valley beat Westfield, 7-3, which is believed to be the Cougars’ first title since 1958.

CLASS D: North Collins’ late season surge continued as junior David Lynch struck out 11 during a two-hitter as the Eagles beat Brocton, 7-0. North Collins won its first title since 2009 as it extended its win streak to five games, four of them in the postseason. The Eagles (11-7), who only have one senior starter, have not given up a run in 20 straight innings.

“This is a great win for the kids, they really started to gel at the right time at the end of the year,” said North Collins coach Paul Kellner. “We didn’t expect a lot this year, and at the end they started playing well. We’re playing good defense and we’re pitching well.”

O’Brien’s comeback complete; EA has a good day at Section VI girls meet

$

OLEAN — For some girls, the Section VI meet is a chance to qualify for the state championship – combining a lifetime of hard work, dedication and a willingness to overcome adversity.

For others, it’s a story of a huge setback turning into a great comeback. For Erin O’Brien of Kenmore East, her story comes full circle.

While she didn’t set a record, she took massive strides in a comeback that was two years in the making. Suffering an ACL tear described as “full-blown” in her words, it was the injury that she was laughing off, in the middle of gasping for air, as she crossed the finish line ahead of everyone else, qualifying for her first trip to states with a time of 1:05.19 in the Division I 400-meter hurdles.

Missing her other chance by a tenth of a second, the senior finally gets her chance to bring it home next weekend. “I just want to thank my parents, my friends and my coaches,” O’Brien said, “Without them I wouldn’t be here right now.”

O’Brien will continue her comeback in college as she plans to attend Edinboro University to participate in track.

In the Division I 1,500-meter run, Sydney Bova of Frontier took first place, with Lockport’s Abby Lang on her heels the entire run. Bova never surrendered the lead, despite having Lang breathing down her neck, who was only seven-tenths of a second behind Bova.

“You really have to know what you’re training for, and how much you really need to train for it,” Bova said, “My mindset has changed so much, I realize that what I believe, I can achieve. That really changed me a lot.”

A day after setting the Section VI record in the triple jump, Frontier’s McKyla Brooks captured the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 4 inches.

She wasn’t the only double winner in Division I. Grand Island thrower Jess Dhaliwall won the shot put and discus, while Hutch-Tech sprinter Lynda Brundige won the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Also in Division I, Lauren Hudson of Williamsville North defended her title in the high jump, winning in 5-7. Amy Villarini of Hamburg took the top spot in the 400 (58.03). Clarence’s 4x800, featuring 3,000-meter champ Marissa Saenger, also ran to victory. The crew consisting of Saenger, Hannah Reinhardt, Katrina Patterson and Dana Warner won in 9:36.08.

Sophia Tasselmyer of East Aurora took first in the Division II 1,500 and will compete in her second state championship. Tasselmyer also was a member of EA’s triumphant 4x800 relay team, which set an Olean High School track record by winning in 9:46.34. Other members included Marta and Molly McLaughlin and Fiona Danieu. EA’s 4x400, which included the McLaughlins, Bekah Zee and Hannah Hitchcock, won in an Olean track record of 4:05.61.

Also in Division II, Hailey Rospierski of Alden won the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches) and 100 hurdles. Southwestern’s Brittany Feldman took first place in the 400 meters (58.83), sending her off to her fourth state championship, the second in the 400 meter dash.

Maple Grove’s Christina Walter won both the 100 and 200 in Division II with City Honors’ Julia Ziaja finishing a close second to her in both events.

First-inning homers help Lancaster take Class AA baseball title

$

NIAGARA FALLS — Come high school playoff time, when league rivals meet in the playoffs after one team has swept the season series from the other, it is inevitable that the saying will be uttered by someone at some point: It’s tough to beat a team three times in a season.

A confident Lancaster team knew all about that, and it prevented loss No. 3 to Orchard Park thanks in large part to a couple of other incarnations of that number. On the third pitch of the game, Joe Preziuso blasted a home run. The third batter of the game, Ryan Stekl, did the same.

Those two first-inning solo homers got Lancaster off to a great start in the Section VI Class AA final, and Stekl and Preziuso also provided fine work on the mound that – despite a close call in the bottom of the seventh – helped lead it to a 4-3 victory and its second championship in three years.

“We’ve been working so hard all year, from December inside our field house until now, to win the championship, it’s just amazing,” said Preziuso, who also added an RBI on a sacrifice fly and came on for a one-inning save.

“We were talking about a good start before the game – its fun to joke about before the game, but when it actually happens, it’s like nothing else. ... We were prepared. We don’t let anyone beat us three times. We don’t let that happen. We knew it was going to be a tough game, we knew they were going to fight back, but we got it done.”

Said Stekl: “I was hoping we were going to come out with a start like that – but as soon as Joe hit that first home run and I hit that second home run, I knew we had the momentum to win the game. It’s good for me too, when I’m pitching, to get the lead early.”

An estimated 200 at Niagara Falls High Schools’ sparkling new turf field complex watched senior Stekl struck out seven in a strong six-inning performance as Lancaster built a 4-0 lead after four and a half innings.

Lancaster’s victory, however, was on the verge of slipping away down to the very last swing.

With Lancaster up 4-2 and an out away from the title, OP senior Dave “Bubba” Hollins blasted a home run to left over a tall fence some at Falls have dubbed “the Screen Monster” to cut the lead to 4-3.

Orchard Park got a walk and a single to put runners on first and second, but Preziuso retired OP sophomore Jeff Palczewski on a hard liner to center field that junior Ryan Ritter sped forward to snag it.

“I can’t thank Ryan Ritter enough, he’s been my buddy since Kindergarten,” said Preziuso. “I’ll relive that again and again.”

“That’s baseball,” said OP coach Jim Gibson, whose Quakers finish 18-3. “We hit the ball pretty good but not in the right spot.

“They outplayed us today. They came up with more plays, they hit the ball when they needed it and we made some uncharacteristic mistakes today, that we haven’t made, really all season, especially defensively. We’ve been airtight defensively, but not today.”

Lancaster (18-4), which lost to eventual state runner-up Clarence in last year’s final, has a week off until it meets the Section V (Rochester area) champion in the Far West Regionals Saturday at a Section V site to be determined.

“It feels great,” said Lancaster coach Mark Dalfonso. “Because this is our third year in a row getting here, and last year let me tell you it didn’t feel so good. The four games we’ve lost this year, we’ve beat ourselves.

“That’s what we told our guys: Don’t beat yourselves, just play your game. And that’s exactly what happened. We just played our game, and our pitcher pitched lights out.”

Hornberger races to record in 1,600 at Section VI meet

$

OLEAN — T.J. Hornberger no longer has to remind himself what the Section VI record is in the 1,600 meters. The mark now belongs to him.

For the past year the Lake Shore senior has been writing the record time of 4:13.07 down on small pieces of paper and leaving them in places he would frequent during the course of his day, a notebook, his locker, rooms in his home.

“I wrote it down like everywhere. I just wanted it so bad,” he said.

The motivation worked.

On Saturday, he put the race of his life together, running a 4:12.77 to break the long-sought-after 27-year record held by Charlie Kern of Sweet Home.

“This was the best I felt all year because I was injured, so I’m so excited I could run this fast,” said Hornberger, who won by a gaudy 16 seconds. “I was going for 4:13 or faster. I saw my time (after the third lap) and I knew I could get there, so I just picked it up and went as fast as I could go.”

Fans sitting in the bleachers at Olean High School sensed they were witnessing history. They stood and cheered during Hornberger’s final 100 meters, an all-out sprint to the finish.

The two-day Section VI Track and Field Championships attracted athletes from 85 schools. Olean proved a gracious host. It was the first time they hosted the event since 2006. The meet was also a qualifier for next weekend’s New York State meet at Cicero-North Syracuse.

The beautiful weather lent itself to many impressive performances.

Senior Corey Wefing of Maple Grove won the Division II 1,600 in 4:23.88. Hornberger and Wefing won their respective 800 meter races on Friday night.

One day after winning the Division II long jump, senior Dawan Jones of Tapestry made himself a double winner taking the triple jump in a WNY-leading 45 feet, 1.5 inches.

Mitch Moore of Jamestown, who has the third-fastest time in the state in the 400 hurdles, won his Division I race in 54.13.

Matt Schaefer of Williamsville North heard footsteps, but it didn’t keep him from winning the Division I 400 meters in 51.01. Markus Diehl of Frontier was a close second in 51.21.

“I could hear him coming from behind me,” said Schaefer, who placed second last year. “It’s all about mentality, you have to get through it, it’s in your head. I kept telling myself I could do it.”

Six-foot-3 senior Bob Liebel of Tonawanda used his long stride to leg out a win in the Division II 400 in 49.98.

“I have the biggest steps and I can eat up more ground in the stretch,” he said.

Daquane Spikes of Sweet Home won the Division I 110 hurdles in 14.71. Runner-up Jeffrey Menyah of Niagara Falls was close behind in 14.82. “I knew I was going against Niagara Falls so I knew I had to get out hard. I guess my reaction time to the gun was quicker,” he said. “I just kept pushing down on my lead leg and bringing it down each time and push it over my trail leg trying to beat him.”

Junior Michael-Jordan Morris of Amherst earned a return trip to states in the Division II 110 hurdles in 15.25.

“I was actually scared the whole race because I thought the guy to my right had me. And I thought someone to my left was catching me, too. So after every hurdle I was like I have to get better or they’re going to catch me. Usually I hit the hurdles with my back leg, and hit them on my ankle and so I kind of like have to power through them.”

Senior Mitch Fuller brought a title back to Lancaster as he won the Division I 100 meters. He got out of the blocks well, got into his drive phase and finished strong in 10:92. Junior Justice Milton of Sweet Home was second in 11.07. “I was trying to get back at Justice Milton (of Sweet Home), he beat me at ECICs and I wanted to get revenge,” said Fuller, who has signed with UB.

A freshman won the Division II 200 meters as Alex Dildy of Bennett finished in 22.71.

Heavy favorite Devon Patterson of Williamsville South dominated the Division I shot put in 63-3.75.

Allegany-Limestone went 1-2 in the Division II shot put thanks to junior Roman Greco (55-3) and senior Pete Harris (48-9.50). Nick Serafin of Depew and Jacob Haight of Barker both cleared 6-4 in the Division II high jump and advanced.

Dan Huben of Clarence defended his Section title in the Division I steeplechase in 9:32.71.

City Honors chasing repeat

The City Honors and Hutch-Tech baseball teams will compete for the Cornell Cup Division I baseball title following semifinal wins on Monday.

City Honors beat Olmsted, 12-2, while Tech eliminated daVinci, 12-2, at McCarthy Park. City Honors is the defending Division I champion.

The big hit for City Honors was a two-run triple by John Liberti which scored John Ruggerio and Andrew Rose. Liberti had three of his team’s 11 hits and drove in three runs. Freshman starting pitcher Justin Wisniewski took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He finished with a three-hitter and eight strikeouts. Coach Frank Dileo gave him the ball because he threw well in his previous start again Olean in the sectionals.

For Tech, Mike Spero got the win on the mound and drove in three run.

City Honors (13-4) and Hutch-Tech (11-5) play for the title on Wednesday at McCarthy Park 4:30 p.m. The teams split in the regular season. Wes Olmsted will start on the mound for Tech. He got the win against Honors in the regular season. City Honors will answer with Caleb Lee.

State track meet is McLaughlin ‘family’ outing

East Aurora coaches Walt and Marty McLaughlin won’t just be taking their family for a ride this weekend.

Three of their kids will be competing for the Blue Devils on Friday and Saturday at the New York State Track and Field Championships at Cicero North Syracuse. The couple’s two daughters and one son are among 10 East Aurora athletes who qualified. Marta, a senior, will run in three events, Molly, who’s in eighth grade, is in two relays and sophomore son Matt is in two events.

“It’s definitely neat when you stop to think about it, but it’s really not our focus,” said Walt. “We want to see all of our ‘kids’ — athletes do well and take advantage of the opportunities that being a runner can offer. Marty and I have been given the gift to teach kids, even our own, what this sport has to offer. We think the results speak for themselves.”

Matt is coming off a big performance at last weekend’s Section VI Championship in Olean as he broke the school record in the 800 and was on the 4x400 relay that also broke a school record. His time of 1:55.66 in the 800 bettered the 1982 mark of 1:55.9. The 4x400 went 3:23 shattering the previous record from 2003 of 3:27. The 4x100 also ran a school record time.

Marta won the sectional title in the 800 for the fifth year in a row. She has signed a national letter of intent with Grand Valley in Grand Rapids, Mich., a national level program in NCAA Division II.

Section VI will send 74 boys and 66 girls to compete in Division I and Division II competition.

Marissa Saenger of Clarence, who missed last year’s states with an injury, will run in the Division I 3,000. She also took great satisfaction in running with Dana Warner, Hannah Reinhardt and Katrina Patterson to win the section title in the 3,200 relay in a school record 9:36.

Look for Teddy Okon of the Red Devils to put on a show at states. At sectionals, he cleared 6-8 in the high jump and just hit his heel on an attempt at 6-10. He also won the triple jump. He broke the school record in the high jump and took over the lead in the state with a 6-9 in a meet at Starpoint. He was recently named the Athlete of the Year at Clarence.

“He’s a classic to see,” said coach John Hunt. “He prepares himself the same way every time. Everyone knows that’s Teddy. He has a great demeanor, everyone likes him.”

Clarence’s Dan Huben returns to the steeplechase where he finished fifth last year.

Maple Grove senior Corey Wefing knows what it’s like to cross the finish line first. He’s a four-time Class D champion in cross country. But this weekend he will not be in the 3,200 distance event. He’s opted instead to run the 800 and 1,600.

“I played baseball this spring, so I didn’t have as much time for training,” said Wefing, who will run for Edinboro in the fall. “Dropping down was just something to get a little more speed training, use my sprinting a little more. I turned out awesome this year doing the 800 and the mile. I loved it. It’s a quicker-paced race. I’m blessed to be able to transition into those different races.”

Christina Walter of Maple Grove will make her fourth trip to states. She already has two Division II state titles in the 100. Her winning time of 11.98 at last year’s Federation meet will likely remain the school record for a long time. She is ranked No. 1 in her class academically and plans to continue her career at Princeton.

“Normally I’d be more nervous, but this year I’m just more excited because I don’t feel as much pressure,” she said. “The key for more, or where I tend to do better, is at the finish. I think I can stay at top speed for longer.”

TJ Hornberger of Lake Shore comes into his fourth state meet as the Section VI record holder in the 1,600 (4:12.77 on Saturday) and in the 3,200 at 9:03.20. He missed the first six weeks of the season with an injury and will run the 800 and 1,600 at states.

Hornberger has signed with Syracuse and was delighted after learning the state meet would be in nearby Cicero. “I want to give it my all, my coaches are probably going to be there, and I want to impress them and go out with a bang as much as I can. I’m going to try and get both PRs.”

He ran his person best in the 800, a 1:53 last Friday at sectionals.

Dawan Jones of Tapestry won the long and triple jump at sectionals, breaking Olean track records along the way. He has the No. 1 jump in WNY in the triple jump. He’ll go to Cortland next season.

Tapestry competes as an independent within Section VI. The lack of a track on their campus forced them to use nearby sites such as Amherst, Johnnie B. Wiley and Cleveland Hill.

“I really want to be the best at what I do, so I’ll do whatever it takes,” said Jones, who has a personal best 22-5. “The long is probably my best event. When I feel uncomfortable when I land, that’s when I know I did something right. It’s not my usual jump, it’s better. If something felt weird, something probably went right.”

Daquane Spikes said people hear his last name and assume he’s a track star. They are right. The Sweet Home senior went to states last year in a relay. This year he earned a trip in the Division I 110 hurdles as well as the 4x100 relay.

Mitch Moore of Jamestown will be competing against a 400 runner with the fastest public school time in the state. Rai Benjamin of Mount Vernon has a 47.17.

“He’s about a second ahead of me so I’m going to try and go out and get him,” said Moore. “That’s a lot to make up, but if I get him, it would be the section record. He’s about 6-5, and he strides everything out, he’s a really strong runner.”

Look for junior McKyla Brooks of Frontier to spend some time on the awards podium in the Division I long and triple jumps.

Sweet Home junior Ally Ortega has a season-best 7:02.99 in the 2,000 steeplechase. In a fast race at states she looks to threaten the Section VI record of 6:58.38.

Immaculata will be sending five athletes to compete in Division II of the Federation meet: Katie Simon (steeple), Grace Attea (400), Maggie Gerard (shot and discus), Meghan Krawiec (long and triple) and Isabelle Blanchard (400H).

It’s guaranteed Section VI will be heard from this weekend as retired Eden athletics director Chuck Yale will be the PA announcer, something he has done since 1983.

Patterson zeroes in on shot title

OLEAN — Devon Patterson qualified for the New York State meet in the discus at last Friday’s Section VI Track & Field Championships, and then he did the unthinkable.

The Williamsville South senior gave up his coveted spot for this weekend’s New York State Championships to the next best finisher, Sam Wray, allowing him to go.

“My personal opinion is the kid deserves it more than I do. I’d rather see him go than me, I’ve got my event,” said Patterson, a two-time state runner-up in the shot put.

“I’ve seen him go from last year doing 147 feet to 165 and beating me every meet we’ve been to except this one. Discus is on the first day [at states], and as much as I could do both, I’d just rather focus on one and rest that one day. That one day helps me relax more.”

Patterson will need to be in the right frame of mind to have any chance of beating the favorite and defending state champion, Ben Bonhurst of Smithtown, who leads the state at 64-0 feet. Bonhurst beat Patterson on his second-last throw at last year’s states.

Bonhurst is coming off an indoor season in which he won the championship at the Nike Indoor Nationals in March at The Armory in New York City. His throw of 65-0 broke the state record. Patterson was a distant second at 63-3.50. Bonhurst told his hometown newspaper his indoor season played out like a “fairy tale.”

Patterson would like to write his own fable. “It’s a bit of a rivalry, but I have to give credit where credit is due, he has the better technique right now, but I’m coming,” said Patterson, who’s outdoor best is 63-7. “It took me four years to understand I can’t go in trying to beat somebody. I have to go in trying to beat myself. When you look in the mirror, that’s your biggest competition.”

As Patterson put the final touches on what has been a memorable high school career, he looks forward to a college career at the University at Buffalo. The Bulls have also signed three other Section VI throwers: Tony DeYoung (Lancaster), McKenzie Kuehlewind (Lancaster) and Jess Dhaliwall (Grand Island).

Kuehlewind has the top throw in the state at 45-0. She has three Section VI outdoor titles to her credit and and was the state indoor champion. She and Dhaliwall plan to room together at UB.

“I definitely can’t be thinking at this as my last meet because then you add more pressure to what you have it being a state meet,” she said. “I got nothing to lose, everything is set with college, so I just want to end on a good note. It’s not going to be easy with good competition like Jess and from around the state.”

Dhaliwall won the Division I shot put and discus at sectionals. She started her high school career as a basketball player, but in a twist of fate, she found track. She tore her ACL playing varsity basketball for the Vikings as a freshman and was left searching for another competitive outlet.

“Tearing your ACL is not fun by any means, it’s a lot of rehab, it’s just that fact that you have to get over a certain fear of turning your knee so hard all the time,” she said. “Yeah, I guess it was kind of a good thing, but it was kind of bad thing too. It will always be a little off, but it’s back to where it’s going to get. You just have to work with what you have.”

One hit is enough for Catt/Little Valley

Cattaraugus/Little Valley capitalized on its only hit of the game to scratch out a run in the bottom of the eighth and win its first Section VI Class C softball championship Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over Franklinville at Jefferson Middle School in Jamestown.

Alexia Ploetz broke up Ally Haskell’s no-hitter with a leadoff single in the eight. She moved along on a sacrifice by Molleigh Bradley. One out later, Ploetz came home when Hannah Powers’ grounder to the right side was misplayed.

Sara Crandall pitched a four-hitter for the win and got help from double plays in the seventh and eighth. Left-fielder Powers had an assist and putout in the double play that ended the eighth. She threw out a Franklinville runner trying to score on a single, then alertly covered third base and tagged out a second Franklinville runner.

Haskell, an eighth-grader, struck out 11. She had fanned 17 in shutting out Cattaraugus/Little Valley and handing the Timberwolves their only loss in CCAA East 2 regular season play.

Pine Valley captured its second straight Class D sectional title, defeating Brocton, 2-0, behind the pitching of sophomore Jessica Wilcox.

Canisius in final

Senior right-hander Connor Ryan pitched a three-hitter and Richard Miller drove in the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning as Canisius gained a berth in the Georgetown Cup baseball playoffs with a 1-0 victory over St. Francis in Tuesday’s semifinal. Ryan struck out 10 and ended the last St. Francis hope by striking out two batters and getting the third on a ground ball in the seventh inning.

Catcher Brendan Kaplewicz tripled to lead off the bottom of the sixth for Canisius and scored on Miller’s fly to left field.

The Crusaders, the Monsignor Martin Association regular season champions, will meet the winner of today’s Cardinal O’Hara-at-St. Joe’s semifinal in the best-of-three championship series starting Monday.

It’s never over until it’s over. Burgard came from behind with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Middle Early College, 18-17, at McCarthy Park and earn a place in the Cornell Cup League II championship game on Thursday.

The Bulldogs benefitted from walks in their comeback. The big hit of the inning was a double by Roderick Morrow, setting the stage for a walk-off single by Hasnat Hason, which scored Robbie Orange Odell with the winning run.

Hason had five RBIs in the game.

Orrange Odell was the winning pitcher, striking out 12.

Riverside advanced to the title game with a 2-0 victory over Emerson behind the three-hit pitching of Josh Oakley, who struck out 16.

Oakley also scored one of the Frontiers’ two runs in the fourth inning. Owen Laureano drove in the other Riverside run.

Williamsville South rallies to stun Starpoint for softball title

SANBORN — Wednesday’s Section VI softball championships began with Clarence authoring a typically dominant performance to win its third straight title in Class AA. Eden then won an expectedly close Class B final with Depew, thanks in large part to an big performance from sophomore Jill Murray.

The third game of the evening at Niagara-Wheatfield’s softball complex was not the most aesthetically pleasing for more than 6½ innings, as Starpoint built a 4-0 lead on Williamsville South in the Class A final.

Then something amazing happened.

Williamsville South, which remained in that 4-0 hole until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and twice were down to their last strike, then put together the unlikeliest of rallies, one that was capped off with a walk-off, three-run home run by senior Brianna Clark as the Billies won the Class A title with a 6-4 victory.

“We can’t believe it,” said Clark, who stepped to the plate with runners on first and second and South trailing, 4-3. “I think I was more relaxed because the momentum was on our side. When I saw that pitch, I just didn’t even think. I just swung. I didn’t even know it went over until I rounded first.”

South’s storybook win is part of a storybook season for the Billies. This year it won its first ECIC II championship since 14-year coach Gerry Gentner’s death from cancer in January 2012. Now coached by Gentner’s daughter, former assistant Julie Murphy, South on Wednesday won its first sectional title since 2007, when Gentner’s program won its fifth straight.

“When there were two outs, I kind of looked up,” Murphy said. “My last sectional final with the girls was with him … it was a tough day, but he certainly got us through it. It was special.

“These girls are incredible. They’re such a special group, and they’ve shown why. We’ve come back like this three or four times during the season.”

Clarence, which got a great pitching performance from senior Katrina Buczkowski (12 strikeouts) and a three-run homer by senior Corrie Colf in a clinical 8-0 victory over Williamsville North in the Class AA final, will face Brockport at 4 p.m. Friday.

Eden will play Wayland-Cohocton in the Class B game at 5 p.m. The program earned its first berth in the state tournament since 1994 with a 2-1 victory over Depew in which Murray starred at the plate and in the pitching circle.

Williamsville South will play Geneva in the Class A regional at 4 p.m. Friday, something that appeared highly unlikely late Wednesday evening.

Starpoint scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth on an overthrow to first. The Spartans then added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a squeeze bunt and a sharp RBI single by junior Allison Block. Block had seven strikeouts in the circle, the last of which put South down to its last out in a four-run hole.

Junior Aimee Lavere then delivered a deep double, and senior Morgan Maley drove her in with a single. Emily Martin and Maddie Clark reached on errors that plated Maley and Martin to make it a 4-3 Starpoint lead. Stephanie Tirone then singled, putting two on for Clark.

“We just kept collecting hits, and we were all just pumped up,” said Clark. “It’s just so surreal. Once Aimee got that bomb, I knew we were going to come back.”

Clarence, the season-long No. 1 large school in the coaches poll, beat ECIC I rival Williamsville North for the third time this season as Buczkowski had a two-hit shutout that was supported by Colf’s three-run blast in the third inning as well as two hits and an RBI from senior Mo Harris.

“This is what we’ve been working up to,” said Buczkowski. “It was a great game all-around. Our goal is now regionals. We’re not thinking about states, we’re just thinking about Brockport.”

Eden’s Murray and Depew freshman Karsen Cotton engaged in an expected pitcher’s duel. Murray helped create both of the Raiders’ runs with two doubles that reached the outfield fence, one which caromed back onto the field off the yellow lining at the top of the wall.

Murray’s first double was in the fourth, and she would eventually score on a wild pitch. She also doubled in the sixth. She was erased on a fielder’s choice, but sophomore Haley Kobie was hit by a pitch, advanced on a single by junior Carly Nasca and scored on another wild pitch.

Depew cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth after senior Chelsea Buono led off with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice. The Wildcats had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the seventh when senior Brooke Guay tripled with two outs, but a squeeze bunt attempt was popped behind the plate, where it was nabbed by catcher Sabrina Kraska.

Riverside tops Burgard for Cornell Cup II title

Riverside walked off the field at McCarthy Park on Thursday as Cornell Cup League II baseball champions thanks to Brandon Jiminez’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, which gave the Frontiers a 4-3 triumph over Burgard.

Winning pitcher Josh Oakley had a huge game for Riverside, culminating with the junior scoring the game-winning run after reaching in the home half of the eighth via walk. He then stole second and third. With one out and two bases open, Burgard opted to pitch to Jiminez.

That proved to be a mistake.

“It was a good line-drive shot to the outfield,” said Riverside first-year coach Welland Davis of the championship-clinching hit.

Oakley struck out 18 and yielded just two hits to earn the win for the Frontiers (15-1). Offensively, he finished with three hits, stole six bases and scored two runs. Owen Laureno also had three hits for Riverside, while DeShawn Haines drove in a run for the winners.

“It’s huge,” Davis said of the importance of winning the Division II title. “It’s a revitalization of the Riverside baseball program. We have a young team, we’re only losing one guy.”

Davis also praised the season-long efforts of assistant coach Alexi Figueroa.

Friday postseason frenzy

It’s not Football Friday, but today figures to be the most frenetic day of the spring season with Section VI athletes resuming the quest for state championships on the softball diamond and in track and field.

Section VI’s softball champions face off against Rochester-area counterparts in the Far West Regionals. Niagara Wheatfield hosts the Class AA (6 p.m.), A (4 p.m.) and B (5 p.m.) regionals, while Brockport State hosts the Class C (4 p.m.) and D (6 p.m.) games.

Day One of the state track and field meet begins today at Cicero-North Syracuse.

Pine Valley, Catt/LV softball fall in regionals

BROCKPORT – The postseason rides ended for both Pine Valley’s and Cattaraugus/Little Valley’s softball teams Friday night at Brockport State as the Section VI champions came up just short against their Rochester-area Section V counterparts in the Far West Regionals.

Pine Valley and V-Arkport scored all of the Class D game’s 11 runs in the first three innings with Arkport winning 6-5. The hosts broke a 5-5 tie on a perfectly executed bunt to drive in the go-ahead run.

PV hit the ball solidly, but made some defensive errors that resulted in five unearned runs for the hosts.

Jamie Wilcox hit a home run for Pine Valley, while Cassie Tingue belted a two-run double.

“It’s been a true pleasure to coach this group,” PV coach Danielle Arnone said. “They can’t keep their heads down.”

In Class C, Bolivar-Richburg beat Cattaraugus/Little Valley, 5-1, bolting to a 3-0 lead in the first and cruising into next Saturday’s state semifinals along with Arkport in South Glens Falls. Catt/LV finished 16-5.

“We set goals of winning sectionals (this season) and said anything after that would be a bonus,” said Catt/LV coach Heather Hyde. “They had a good run. … I’m pretty proud of them.”
