A change in defensive scheme helped 10th-seeded Iroquois upset No. 2 Albion in girls basketball playoff action Thursday.
The Chiefs played aggressive zone in the second half to earn a 52-48 win in the Class A-2 quarterfinals.
Albion took an 18-11 first-quarter lead, but Iroquois closed the half on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to five. The Chiefs chipped away in the second half to gain the lead.
“We played man early in the game,” Iroquois coach Frank Payne said. “We haven’t seen Albion play that much and they have really athletic kids. We switched to zone in the second half. They weren’t hitting their shots, and we were getting rebounds and more possessions. That was a big change.”
Marissa Parker had eight of her 10 points in the second half along with 11 rebounds, while Colleen Wirth scored 13 of her 16 in the second half.
Junior Ejayah Arrington had a season-high 13 points while coming up with 11 steals for the Chiefs (9-11).
Fredonia took an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, but the Huskies went on 32-11 run in the second and third quarters to blow the game open.
Rachel Painter had 10 points and nine rebounds for Olean (9-10).
Elsewhere, with six seconds left in regulation, Gabrielle Outling hit a pair of free throws to give Buffalo Arts a 44-43 win over Depew. Summer Hemphill led all scorers with 20 points.
A triple-double by Danyae Barclay paced Bennett (10-9) to a 62-58 win over Eden. Barclay finished with 16 points, 22 rebounds and 11 blocks.
Jenna Faulkner hit one of her five three-pointers near the end of regulation and Erica Bradley went 4 for 4 from the foul line to send the game into overtime for the Spartans (15-3).
“She had her best game of the season,” Williamsville East coach Chris Durr said. “I think on the defensive end we made it an ugly basketball game down the stretch and had some key rebounds.”
And it was the Macks who won the rematch, taking control in the overtime period to earn a 66-55 win over the Panthers in the quarterfinals.
“The motivation was winning a playoff game,” McKinley coach Mike Sorrentino said.” We didn’t need that extra looking back. The girls didn’t get frustrated. I thought they played as a team and kept it together even though some times things didn’t go our way.”
The Panthers had tied the game with a bucket at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, but McKinley went on a 14-4 run to control the extra period. Daesha Thomas and Shamecca Minor each had 15 points and seven assists for the Macks (17-2).
The series against the prep school that’s produced a who’s who of NHL talent acts as a tuneup for the postseason for Nichols. Nichols begins the CISAA playoffs Monday.

Courtney Martin scored 17 points with 15 rebounds as Olean upset top-seeded Fredonia, 58-38, in a Class B-1 quarterfinal.Fredonia took an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, but the Huskies went on 32-11 run in the second and third quarters to blow the game open.
