When: 8:15 tonight at Buffalo State Sports Arena.
Admission: $6 (for Class A-AA doubleheader).
New York State Sportswriters Association Class AA rankings (released Tuesday): 1. Lincoln-PSAL; 6. Greece-Athena; 14. Jamestown.
How they got here: Jamestown beat Clarence, 60-40, for its second straight Section VI title; Greece-Athena beat Fairport, 72-60, for the Section V title.
Jamestown starters and key reserves: 5-10 jr. Zack Panebianco, 6-5 sr. Quinn Lee Yaw, 5-6 so. Zacc Kinsey, 6-4 jr. Stephen Carlson, 6-0 jr. Ben Larson; 6-1 sr. Matt Hoaglund; 6-3 sr. Brian Park.
Court vision: This is an odd situation in which the teams have met this season. In Jamestown’s season-opener, it was to play Fredonia but weather prevented the Hillbillies from making it. Instead it played Greece-Athena, which was scheduled to be in the other opening round game, on that Dec. 13 evening and Athena used a big fourth quarter to win, 74-54. Section V has had more depth in AA all year, and that’s reflected in Athena’s favored status. Athena’s only loss is to Olean, who it split with.
Who’s got next: The winner advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four at the Glens Falls Civic Center. It will play in the semifinals next Saturday at 12:30 against the winner of tonight’s 5:45 regional playoff between Section I (Westchester County) champion Mount Vernon and Section IV (Binghamton area) champion Union-Endicott at Binghamton University.
