The Jamestown girls basketball team has waited a year to settle a score with Gates-Chili.
The Red Raiders find themselves in a rematch with the Spartans in Saturday’s Class AA contest in the 34th annual Far West Regionals.
Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua will host the five-game marathon with each winner advancing to the state final four.
The Red Raiders are hoping their band of five junior starters are up to avenging last year’s humbling 80-59 defeat. Gates lost in last year’s state final.
Jamestown has won seven Section VI titles, but hasn’t won a game against Section V since 1984, a 39-35 win over Mercy.
Jamestown is hoping its inside-outside game of Anne Campion and Chrisanna Green will be enough to send them to the state final four at Hudson Valley Community College.
Green has scored 446 points this season for a 21.2 average. Campion (12.8) is a difference-maker on both ends.
“She set the tone with her ability to attack the basket,” said coach Tim Anderson. “If we can, we’d like to find a third or fourth scorer, and then we’d be pretty confident against anybody.”
Standing in the way will be Gates’ Cierra Dillard, who has signed with UMass. She averages 26 points per game and also leads her team in assists and rebounds. Anderson said he’s going to try a variety of things to slow Dillard, hoping to find the right formula.
“We talked about wanting to set some history and put our stamp on this program for the first time in 30 years,” said Anderson. “That would be quite the accomplishment.”
Jamestown’s probable starters: Campion-11, Green-11, Peyton Butts-11, Kaleisha Mosley-11, Dazjah Coleman-11.
It could be a long day for Section VI. Last year, the locals went 0-5 and 1-4 two years ago. Section V leads the overall series, 92-50 lead.
Williamsville South, Tonawanda and Chautauqua Lake will all be making their first trips.
A capsule look at each matchup:
The Knights have one of Section V’s top players in Liz Greendyke (18 ppg). The 5-11 senior has 1,248 career points and was second team All-Greater Rochester a year ago.
She is just one of the matchup issues South will have. Six-foot-1 Santita Ebangwese is not only strong in the post, she can shoot from outside, and the coach’s daughter, Abby Judd, leads the team in rebounds. The Knights’ only loss was 51-45 to Webster-Thomas on Feb. 4.
“Section V – everyone knows their reputation,” said South coach Kristen Dolan, “but our girls have been working just as hard and have prepared. If I continue to make sure they’re confident, take care of the ball and make good decisions you never know.”
Dolan said one of her team’s strengths is everyone knows and accepts their role. Three players average in double figures: Emily Smith (12.6), Zaria McCullough (11.7) and Grace Licata (11.3). South’s probable starters: Erin Egan-11, Nina Ragland-10, McCullough-9, Licata-11, Smith-11.
The Warriors face a formidable opponent in Kearney, winners of 16 in a row. They played a home-and-away with Olean and beat them, 66-24 and 86-39.
“We all know they’re good,” said Hall, “but no one thought we would get this far so we’re just going to assume we can win every game we play.”
The Warriors are led by Alanna Herne (12.6 ppg, 5.4 assists), Kalyn Compeau (11.2 ppg, 4.1 steals) and Savanna Baughman (10.5 rpg). Compeau is coming off a season-high 24 points in her last start against Wilson.
Kearney hasn’t lost since back-to-back defeats in the fourth and fifth games of the season. They lost to Nottingham, 60-53, and Fayetteville-Manlius, 61-55.
Tonawanda’s probable starters: Compeau-12, Herne-12, Paige Hill-11, Baughman-12, Haley Schoelerman-9.
Tara Hunt, Jenna Einink and Courtney Hewes are in their fourth seasons on the varsity while the other two starters, Ashley Moulton and Ashton Albanesius are in their third.
“It’s a big game and obviously they’re going to be nervous,” said coach Eric Schuster. “But this team has a certain persona, they just go out and play, they’ll settle down and I think we’ll do pretty well.”
Einink (20 ppg.) surpassed 1,000 career points in the fourth game of the season. Albanesius averages 16 and Hewes 10 per game.
The Thunderbirds have won 18 in a row since suffering its only loss to this year’s Class AA champion Jamestown.
Schuster got a chance to scout Keshequa against Avon in January and thinks his team matches up pretty well.
“They’re not the biggest team, but they are fundamentally sound, they like to press, but I like our chances. Our bigs (Moulton, Einik and Albanesius) are tough, they rebound and they score. I just think we match up very well.”
Chautauqua Lake probable starters: Hunt-12, Moulton-12, Einink-11, Albanesius-11, Hewes-11.
“They have a big front line. They go 6-0, 5-11, 5-11 and they press all over the place,” said PV coach Tim Nobles, now in his 31st season. “They got basically everything: shooting, inside play, they are formidable. We’re going to have our work cut out for us.”
Pine Valley counters with Kayla Mansfield (12.4 ppg., 10 rpg.) and Alex Bentham (11.8 ppg.).
It’s the Lady Panthers’ 13th appearance in the Far West Regional, but their first since 2004-2005. They won this game nine times.
Pine Valley probable starters: Aaren Waterman-12, Mansfield-12, Bentham-11, Kaleigh Brunswick-11, Katie Hoth-11.
