The most important week of the season for Western New York high school baseball and softball got off to a sputtering start Tuesday.
Rain put a damper on the start of things.
The best-of-three Georgetown Cup championship series in the Monsignor Martin Association will open at 4 p.m. today at Coca-Cola Field after Tuesday’s scheduled opener between Canisius and St. Joe’s was called off.
Game Two of the series is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday at the downtown ballpark. Game Three, if needed, will be on Friday at 4 p.m. at Coca-Cola Field.
Four Section VI baseball playoff games are scheduled today, including finals in Class B-1, B-2, C and D.
Tuesday’s weather also affected some Section VI softball playoffs. Rained out were the Niagara-Wheatfield at No. 1 ranked large school Clarence and Lancaster at Niagara Falls Class AA semifinals, and the Cassadaga Valley at Cattaraugus/Little Valley Class C semifinal. All three games were rescheduled for today.
Finals are also scheduled for today in Class A-1, A-2, B-1 and B-2.
The field crew at Frewsburg got an early start after the morning rain and the No. 1 seeded Bears were able to get in their Class C semifinal with Chautauqua Lake, defeating the Thunderbirds, 6-2.
“Our field dries up real well, and the crew started at noon and worked hard to get it into shape. It was great for the game,” said Frewsburg coach Jon Blanchard.
The Bears took charge early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Winning pitcher Samantha Mott drove in two of the runs and rode home herself on a two-run homer by Annie Berg.
Mott, a senior right-hander who was named Pitcher of the Year in CCAA II in 2012, pitched a four-hitter, striking out 10.
Frewsburg, the two-time defending sectional Class C champion, will face either Cassadaga Valley or Cattaraugus/Little Valley for the Class C title at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Jamestown High.
The Bears swept two regular season games against Cattaraugus/Little Valley and split with Cassadaga Valley on their way to an 11-1 record in the CCAA II regular season.
In a Class D semifinal, No. 1 seeded Forestville’s Ryan Duggan struck out 14 in a one-hitter as she shut out Ripley, 13-0. Ashley Van Buskirk went 4 for 4 with three doubles for the Hornets.
