The Section VI boys lacrosse championship matchups were a repeat of last year, and so were the results — so far. Mother Nature came along and stole the event’s finale.
Hamburg repeated as Class B champion, and Silver Creek won its fifth straight title in Class C, but heavy rains and lightning led to the postponement of the Class A game between defending champion Orchard Park and Clarence.
An estimated combined crowd of 2,000 at All High Stadium on Tuesday saw Hamburg shrug off an early deficit to rout Niagara-Wheatfield, 17-6, in Class B as Max Maxwell scored six goals and fellow senior Nick Wilcox dominated on faceoffs.
Silver Creek also overcame a slow start before pulling way. Senior Zed Williams scored eight goals as the Black Knights used a 12-6 run in the second half to earn a 17-12 victory over Akron in the Class C final.
The Class A game between top-seeded Orchard Park (16-1) and second-seeded Clarence (12-5) was scheduled for 8 p.m. but was delayed due to thunder and lightning. At 8:41, the game was postponed. It will be played at Hamburg today at 5:30 p.m. It will be the fourth straight year those teams will meet for the Class A championship.
Clarence will try to avoid a repeat of last year’s sectionals, in which it joined Niagara-Wheatfield and Akron as runners-up, while Orchard Park will try to again join Hamburg and Silver Creek in the Far West Regionals.
Hamburg (16-2) will face Canandaigua at 1 p.m. in Saturday’s Class B Far West Regionals at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, while Silver Creek (17-2) will play Penn Yan in the Class C game at 3:30 p.m. The Class A game is at 6.
Top-seeded Hamburg routed second-seeded Niagara-Wheatfield in the Class B game for the second straight year, but it was all Falcons early on.
Niagara-Wheatfield (11-7) started quickly, scoring the game’s first two goals, both by senior Rob McMicking. , Hamburg took its first lead at 4-3 with 4:46 left in the first quarter and rolled from there.
“They certainly got our attention with those first two goals, but as captain Nick Wilcox mentioned, there was no panic,” said Hamburg coach Jerry Severino. “We knew what we were going to do and how we would do it. We just needed to take a deep breath and gather ourselves, and before you know it, we were back in the game.”
Many of Hamburg’s possessions started with faceoff wins by Wilcox, who Maxwell called “a beast.” Then the Bulldogs moved the ball superbly on offense, with many three- and four-pass combinations ending in goals.
“We were definitely comfortable, but we definitely have room for improvement,” Maxwell said. “Rochester always has a good team.”
“It means everything,” Maxwell said of winning at regionals.
“We want our program to be one of the more dominant teams in the state. That’s the plan: Just keep on going farther.”
Canandaigua won the Section V final in triple overtime with the aptly-named Dan LaCrosse scoring to give the Braves a 12-11 victory over Victor. Hamburg owns a 13-12 home win over Canandaigua on April 19.
Silver Creek started slowly, trailing 5-1 in the second quarter, but Williams led the Black Knights back by doing a little bit of everything: winning faceoffs, picking the ball off on defense, setting up teammates on offense and finishing big goals.
“It’s great when you can have someone control the ball at the X,” said Silver Creek coach Bill Brennan. “If he gets it, he has the green light to go. Even if he loses it, he’s so determined to get the ball, he’s going to get it. You get him going, he has that motivation where he doesn’t want to lose, and look out.”
Williams scored his team’s first five goals, getting four in the second quarter as Silver Creek made it a 5-4 game at halftime, then adding the first of the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5.
“We just woke up a little bit and cut down on our mistakes,” said Williams, the Virginia recruit who has broken national high school lacrosse records for goals and assists in a career and who has now been a part of eight sectional titles (five lacrosse, two basketball, one football).
Sophomore Jonah Mohawk added seven goals for Silver Creek, which led by as much as 17-10 in the fourth quarter. Seventh-grader Chase Scanlan made some nice saves in the second half to help keep Akron (15-4) from coming back.
In the Section V Class C final, Penn Yan won its 18th sectional title by beating Geneva, 6-1.
“It’s three years in a row now,” said Williams, whose Black Knights beat Penn Yan two years ago but lost last year, “so it’ll be fun.”
